Hadith text

Narrated `Abdullah bin 'Ubaidullah bin Abi Mulaika:One of the daughters of `Uthman died at Mecca. We went to attend her funeral procession. Ibn `Umar and Ibn `Abbas were also present. I sat in between them (or said, I sat beside one of them. Then a man came and sat beside me.) `Abdullah bin `Umar said to `Amr bin `Uthman, "Will you not prohibit crying as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has said, 'The dead person is tortured by the crying of his relatives.?" Ibn `Abbas said, "`Umar used to say so." Then he added narrating, "I accompanied `Umar on a journey from Mecca till we reached Al-Baida. There he saw some travelers in the shade of a Samura (A kind of forest tree). He said (to me), "Go and see who those travelers are." So I went and saw that one of them was Suhaib. I told this to `Umar who then asked me to call him. So I went back to Suhaib and said to him, "Depart and follow the chief of the faithful believers." Later, when `Umar was stabbed, Suhaib came in weeping and saying, "O my brother, O my friend!" (on this `Umar said to him, "O Suhaib! Are you weeping for me while the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The dead person is punished by some of the weeping of his relatives?" Ibn `Abbas added, "When `Umar died I told all this to Aisha and she said, 'May Allah be merciful to `Umar. By Allah, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not say that a believer is punished by the weeping of his relatives. But he said, Allah increases the punishment of a non-believer because of the weeping of his relatives." Aisha further added, "The Qur'an is sufficient for you (to clear up this point) as Allah has stated: 'No burdened soul will bear another's burden.' " (35.18). Ibn `Abbas then said, "Only Allah makes one laugh or cry." Ibn `Umar did not say anything after that

Abdullah bin Ubaidullah bin Abi Mulaika bataate hain: Uthman ki ek beti ka Mecca mein intiqal hua. Hum unke janaze mein shareek hone gaye. Ibn Umar aur Ibn Abbas bhi maujood the. Abdullah bin Umar ne Amr bin Uthman se kaha: "Kya aap rone ko mana nahi karenge, jabke Allah ke Rasool ne farmaya: 'Marhoom ko uske rishtedaron ke rone se azaab hota hai'?" Ibn Abbas ne kaha: "Umar aisa kaha karte the." Phir unhone bataya: "Main Umar ke saath ek safar mein Mecca se Al-Baida tak gaya. Wahan unhone kuch musafiron ko Samura (ek jangli darakht) ke saaye mein dekha. Unhone (mujhse) kaha: 'Jaao dekho yeh musafir kaun hain.' Main gaya aur dekha unme se ek Suhaib the. Maine Umar ko bataya, unhone mujhse unhe bulane ko kaha. Main Suhaib ke paas wapas gaya aur kaha: 'Chaliye, Ameer-ul-Momineen ke saath jaayein.' Baad mein, jab Umar ko chhura mara gaya, Suhaib rote hue andar aaye aur keh rahe the: 'Aye mere bhai, aye mere dost!' Isspar Umar ne unse kaha: 'Aye Suhaib! Kya tum mere liye ro rahe ho jabke Nabi ne farmaya tha: Marhoom ko uske rishtedaron ke kuch rone se saza hoti hai?'" Ibn Abbas ne aage kaha: "Jab Umar ka intiqal hua, maine yeh sab Ayesha ko bataya, unhone kaha: 'Allah Umar par reham kare. Allah ki qasam, Allah ke Rasool ne yeh nahi kaha tha ke momin ko uske rishtedaron ke rone se saza hoti hai. Balki Aap ne farmaya tha ke Allah kaafir ki saza uske rishtedaron ke rone ki wajah se badhata hai.'" Ayesha ne yeh bhi joda: "Tumhare liye Quran hi kaafi hai (is baat ko samjhne ke liye), kyunke Allah ne farmaya hai: 'Koi bojh uthane wala doosre ka bojh nahi uthaega' (35:18)." Ibn Abbas ne phir kaha: "Sirf Allah hansataa hai aur rulataa hai." Ibn Umar ne iske baad kuch nahi kaha.
