Hadith text

Ibn Juraij said, " `Ata informed us that when Ibn Hisham forbade women to perform Tawaf with men he said to him, 'How do you forbid them while the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to perform Tawaf with the men?' I said, 'Was this before decreeing of the use of the veil or after it? `Ata took an oath and said, 'I saw it after the order of veil.' I said, 'How did they mix with the men?' `Ata said, 'The women never mixed with the men, and `A'ishah used to perform Tawaf separately and never mixed with men. Once it happened that `A'ishah was performing the Tawaf, and a woman said to her, 'O Mother of believers! Let us touch the Black stone.' `A'ishah said to her, 'Go yourself,' and she herself refused to do so. The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to come out in night, in disguise and used to perform Tawaf with men. But whenever they intended to enter the Ka`bah, they would stay outside till the men had gone out. I and `Ubaid bin `Umair used to visit `A'ishah while she was residing at Jauf Thabir." I asked, "What was her veil?" `Ata said, "She was wearing an old Turkish veil, and that was the only thing (veil) which was screen between us and her. I saw a pink cover on her

Ibn Juraij bataate hain: Ata ne humein bataya ke jab Ibn Hisham ne aurton ko mardon ke saath Tawaf karne se mana kiya, unhone (Ata ne) kaha: "Aap unhe kaise mana kar sakte hain jabke Nabi ki biwiyan mardon ke saath Tawaf karti thi?" Maine kaha: "Kya yeh parda ka hukum aane se pehle tha ya baad mein?" Ata ne qasam khakar kaha: "Maine ise parda ke hukum ke baad dekha." Maine kaha: "Woh mardon ke saath kaise ghulmil jaati thi?" Ata ne kaha: "Aurtein mardon ke saath ghulmil nahi hoti thi, aur Ayesha alag se Tawaf karti thi aur kabhi mardon se ghulmil nahi hoti thi. Ek baar Ayesha Tawaf kar rahi thi, aur ek aurat ne unse kaha: 'Aye Ummul-Momineen! Chaliye Hajr-e-Aswad ko chhue.' Ayesha ne kaha: 'Tum khud jaao,' aur khud aisa karne se inkaar kiya. Nabi ki biwiyan raat ko chhup kar bahar aati aur mardon ke saath Tawaf karti thi. Magar jab bhi woh Ka'ba mein daakhil hone ka iraada karti, woh bahar rukti jab tak mard chale na jaate." Main aur Ubaid bin Umair Ayesha se milne jate the jabke woh Jauf Thabir mein rehti thi. Maine pucha: "Unka parda kya tha?" Ata ne kaha: "Unhone ek purana Turki parda pehna hua tha, aur woh sirf woh (parda) tha jo humare aur unke darmiyan hijaab tha. Maine unpar ek gulaabi chadar dekhi."
