Sahih al-Bukhari 2120

Hadith text

Narrated Anas bin Malik:While the Prophet (ﷺ) was in the market, somebody, called, "O Abul-Qasim." The Prophet (ﷺ) turned to him. The man said, "I have called to this (i.e. another man)." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Name yourselves by my name but not by my Kunya (name)." (In Arabic world it is the custom to call the man as the father of his eldest son, e.g. Abul-Qasim.) Anas bin Malik (رضی اللہ عنہ) bataate hain: Jabke Nabi bazaar mein the, kisi ne pukaara: "Aye Abul-Qasim." Nabi unki taraf mude. Shaks ne kaha: "Maine (kisi doosre shaks ko) pukaara tha." Nabi ne kaha: "Apne naam mere naam par rakho magar meri Kunya (yaani Abul-Qasim jaisa naam) na rakho." (Arab duniya mein rivaaj hai ke shaks ko uske sabse bade bete ke baap ke tor par bulaya jaata hai, jaise Abul-Qasim.)
