Sahih al-Bukhari 2372

Hadith text

Narrated Zaid bin Khalid:A man came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and asked about Al-Luqata (a fallen thing). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Recognize its container and its tying material and then make a public announcement about it for one year and if its owner shows up, give it to him; otherwise use it as you like." The man said, "What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It is for you, your brother or the wolf." The man said "What about a lost camel?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Why should you take it as it has got its water-container (its stomach) and its hooves and it can reach the places of water and can eat the trees till its owner finds it?

Zaid bin Khalid (رضی اللہ عنہ) bataate hain: Ek shaks Allah ke Rasool ke paas aaya aur unse Al-Luqata (giri hui cheez) ke baare mein pucha. Nabi ne kaha: "Uske bartan aur uski baandhne wali cheez ko pehchaan lo, phir ek saal tak isse public elaan karo, aur agar uska maalik zaahir ho jaaye, use de do; warna use apni marzi se istemal karo." Shaks ne pucha: "Ek gum-shuda bhed ke baare mein kya?" Nabi ne kaha: "Yeh tumhare liye hai, tumhare bhai ke liye, ya bhediye ke liye." Shaks ne pucha: "Ek gum-shuda unt ke baare mein kya?" Nabi ne kaha: "Ise kyun loge jabke iske paas apna paani ka bartaan (yaani uska pet) hai, aur iske khur hain, aur yeh paani ki jagahon tak pahunch sakta hai aur darakht kha sakta hai jab tak iska maalik ise na paa le?"
