Hadith text

Narrated Abaya bin Rifaa:My grandfather, Rafi` bin Khadij said, "We were in the valley of Dhul-Hulaifa of Tihama in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) and had some camels and sheep (of the booty). The people hurried (in slaughtering the animals) and put their meat in the pots and started cooking. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came and ordered them to upset the pots, and distributed the booty considering one camel as equal to ten sheep. One of the camels fled and the people had only a few horses, so they got worried. (The camel was chased and) a man stopped the camel by throwing an arrow at it. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'Some of these animals are untamed like wild animals, so if anyone of them went out of your control, then you should treat it as you have done now.' " My grandfather said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! We fear that we may meet our enemy tomorrow and we have no knives, could we slaughter the animals with reeds?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, or you can use what would make blood flow (slaughter) and you can eat what is slaughtered and the Name of Allah is mentioned at the time of slaughtering. But don't use teeth or fingernails (in slaughtering). I will tell you why, as for teeth, they are bones, and fingernails are used by Ethiopians for slaughtering. (See Hadith)

Abaya bin Rifaa bataate hain: Mere dada, Rafi bin Khadij, ne kaha: "Hum Tihama ke Dhul-Hulaifa wadi mein Nabi ke saath the aur (maal-e-ghanimat mein) kuch unt aur bhedein thi. Logon ne jaldi ki (janwar zabah karne mein) aur unka gosht bartanon mein daalkar pakana shuru kiya. Allah ke Rasool aaye aur unhe bartanon ko ulat dene ka hukum diya, aur maal-e-ghanimat taqseem kiya, ek unt ko das bhedon ke barabar samajhte huye. Ek unt bhaag gaya aur logon ke paas sirf kuch ghode the, isliye woh pareshaan ho gaye. (Unt ka picha kiya gaya aur) ek shaks ne teer maarkar unt ko rok diya. Allah ke Rasool ne kaha: 'Inme se kuch janwar jangli janwaron jaise hain, isliye agar inme se koi tumhare kaboo se bahar chala jaaye, to isi tarah karo jaise abhi kiya.'" Mere dada ne kaha: "Ya Allah ke Rasool! Humein dar hai kal humari mulaqaat dushman se ho sakti hai aur humare paas chaku nahi honge, kya hum narkal se janwar zabah kar sakte hain?" Nabi ne kaha: "Haan, ya woh cheez istemal karo jisse khoon bahe (zabah), aur jo zabah kiya jaaye use khao agar zabah karte waqt Allah ka naam liya gaya ho. Magar daanton ya naakhunon se zabah mat karo. Main tumhe batata hoon kyun: daant hadiyan hain, aur naakhun Ethiopiyon dwaara zabah karne mein istemal hote hain."
