Hadith text
Ibn 'Abbas (ra) said, "A man from the tribe of Bani Sahm went out in the company of Tamim Ad-Dari and 'Adi bin Badda'. The man of Bani Sahm died in a land where there was no Muslim. When Tamim and 'Adi returned conveying the property of the deceased, they claimed that they had lost a silver bowl with gold engraving. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made them take an oath (to confirm their claim), and then the bowl was found in Makkah with some people who claimed that they had bought it from Tamim and 'Adi. Then two witnesses from the relatives of the deceased got up and swore that their witnesses were more valid than the witnesses of 'Adi and Tamim, and that the bowl belonged to their deceased fellow. So, this verse was revealed in connection with this case: 'O you who believe! When death approached any of you ...'," (V 5:)
Ibn Abbas bataate hain: Bani Sahm qabile ka ek shaks Tamim Ad-Dari aur Adi bin Badda ke saath nikla. Bani Sahm ka shaks ek aisi zameen mein guzar gaya jahan koi Musalman nahi tha. Jab Tamim aur Adi marhoom ki jaidad lekar wapas aaye, unhone daava kiya ke unhone sona jatit ek chandi ka bartan khoya diya hai. Allah ke Rasool ne unse qasam likhwaee (unke daave ki tasdeeq ke liye), aur phir woh bartan Mecca mein kuch logon ke paas mila jinhone daava kiya ke unhone use Tamim aur Adi se khareeda tha. Phir marhoom ke rishtedaron mein se do gawaah khade hue aur qasam khaee ke unki gawahi Adi aur Tamim ki gawahi se zyada sahi hai, aur ke bartan unke marhoom rishtedaar ka tha. Isliye yeh ayat isi maamle ke baare mein nazil hui: "Aye imandaar logo! Jab maut tum mein se kisi ke qareeb aaye..." (5:106).
