Hadith text

Narrated Al-Bara bin Azib:The Prophet (ﷺ) appointed `Abdullah bin Jubair as the commander of the infantry men (archers) who were fifty on the day (of the battle) of Uhud. He instructed them, "Stick to your place, and don't leave it even if you see birds snatching us, till I send for you; and if you see that we have defeated the infidels and made them flee, even then you should not leave your place till I send for you." Then the infidels were defeated. By Allah, I saw the women fleeing lifting up their clothes revealing their leg-bangles and their legs. So, the companions of `Abdullah bin Jubair said, "The booty! O people, the booty ! Your companions have become victorious, what are you waiting for now?" `Abdullah bin Jubair said, "Have you forgotten what Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to you?" They replied, "By Allah! We will go to the people (i.e. the enemy) and collect our share from the war booty." But when they went to them, they were forced to turn back defeated. At that time Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in their rear was calling them back. Only twelve men remained with the Prophet (ﷺ) and the infidels martyred seventy men from us. On the day (of the battle) of Badr, the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions had caused the 'Pagans to lose 140 men, seventy of whom were captured and seventy were killed. Then Abu Sufyan asked thrice, "Is Muhammad present amongst these people?" The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered his companions not to answer him. Then he asked thrice, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa present amongst these people?" He asked again thrice, "Is the son of Al-Khattab present amongst these people?" He then returned to his companions and said, "As for these (men), they have been killed." `Umar could not control himself and said (to Abu Sufyan), "You told a lie, by Allah! O enemy of Allah! All those you have mentioned are alive, and the thing which will make you unhappy is still there." Abu Sufyan said, "Our victory today is a counterbalance to yours in the battle of Badr, and in war (the victory) is always undecided and is shared in turns by the belligerents, and you will find some of your (killed) men mutilated, but I did not urge my men to do so, yet I do not feel sorry for their deed" After that he started reciting cheerfully, "O Hubal, be high! (1) On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) What shall we say?" He said, "Say, Allah is Higher and more Sublime." (Then) Abu Sufyan said, "We have the (idol) Al `Uzza, and you have no `Uzza." The Prophet said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They asked, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What shall we say?" He said, "Say Allah is our Helper and you have no helper

Al-Bara bin Azib bataate hain: Nabi ne Abdullah bin Jubair ko Uhud ki jung ke din paidal fauj (tirandaajon) ka sardaar muqarrar kiya jinki taadaad pachaas thi. Unhone unhe hukum diya, "Apni jagah par date raho, aur ise mat chhodo chahe tum dekho ke parinde humein noch rahe hain, jab tak main tumhe bulane ke liye kisi ko na bheju; aur agar tum dekho ke humne kaafiron ko haar di hai aur unhe bhagane par majboor kiya hai, tab bhi apni jagah mat chhodna jab tak main tumhe bulane ke liye kisi ko na bheju." Phir kaafir hare. Allah ki qasam, maine auraton ko apne kapde uthakar bhaagte dekha, unki taangon ke kangan aur taangen dikh rahi thi. Isliye Abdullah bin Jubair ke sathiyon ne kaha, "Maal-e-ghanimat! Aye logo, maal-e-ghanimat! Tumhare sathi jeet gaye hain, ab tum kis baat ka intezar kar rahe ho?" Abdullah bin Jubair ne kaha, "Kya tum Allah ke Rasool ki baat bhool gaye?" Unhone jawab diya, "Allah ki qasam! Hum un logon (yaani dushman) ke paas jaenge aur maal-e-ghanimat mein apna hissa lenge." Magar jab woh unke paas gaye, unhe haar kar wapas mudna pada. Us waqt Allah ke Rasool unke peeche the, unhe wapas bula rahe the. Sirf baarah log Nabi ke saath reh gaye aur kaafiron ne humare sattar log shaheed kar diye. Badr ki jung ke din, Nabi aur unke sahaba ne mushrikon ke ek sau chaalis log haaraaye the, unme se sattar pakade gaye aur sattar mare gaye. Phir Abu Sufyan ne teen baar pucha, "Kya Muhammad in logon mein maujood hain?" Nabi ne apne sahaba ko unhe jawab na dene ka hukum diya. Phir usne teen baar pucha, "Kya Abu Quhafa ka beta in logon mein maujood hai?" Usne phir teen baar pucha, "Kya Al-Khattab ka beta in logon mein maujood hai?" Phir woh apne sathiyon ki taraf muda aur kaha, "Jahaan tak in (logon) ka sawaal hai, woh qatl kiye ja chuke hain." Umar apne aap ko rok na sake aur (Abu Sufyan se) kaha, "Tumne jhoot bola, Allah ki qasam! Aye Allah ke dushman! Tumne jinka zikar kiya, sab zinda hain, aur woh cheez jo tumhe naraaj karegi, abhi bhi baqi hai." Abu Sufyan ne kaha, "Aaj hamari fatah Badr ki jung mein tumhari fatah ke barabar hai, aur jung mein (fatah) hamesha adalbadli hoti hai aur baari-baari milti hai, aur tum apne mure hue logon mein se kuchon ko vikrit (ang-bhang) paoge, magar maine apne logon ko aisa karne ka hukum nahi diya, magar mujhe unke kaam ka afsos bhi nahi." Iske baad, usne khush hote huye padhna shuru kiya, "Aye Hubal, buland ho!" Isspar Nabi ne (apne sahaba se) kaha, "Tum use jawab kyun nahi dete?" Unhone kaha, "Ya Allah ke Rasool! Hum kya kahen?" Unhone kaha, "Kaho, Allah buland aur mahaan hai." (Phir) Abu Sufyan ne kaha, "Humare paas (but) Al-Uzza hai, aur tumhare paas koi Uzza nahi." Nabi ne (apne sahaba se) kaha, "Tum use jawab kyun nahi dete?" Unhone pucha, "Ya Allah ke Rasool! Hum kya kahen?" Unhone kaha, "Kaho, Allah humara madadgaar hai aur tumhara koi madadgaar nahi."
