Hadith text

Narrated Marwan bin Al-Hakam and Miswar bin Makhrama:When the Hawazin delegation came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) after they had embraced Islam and requested him to return their properties and war prisoners to them, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "To me the best talk is the truest, so you may choose either of two things; the war prisoners or the wealth, for I have delayed their distribution." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had waited for them for over ten days when he returned from Ta'if. So, when those people came to know that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was not going to return to them except one of the two things the said, "We choose our war Prisoners 'Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) stood up amongst the Muslims, and after glorifying Allah as He deserved, he said, "Now then, these brothers of yours have come to us with repentance, and I see it logical that I should return their captives to them, so whoever of you likes to do that as a favor then he can do it, and whoever amongst you likes to stick to his share, let him give up his prisoners and we will compensate him from the very first Fai' (i.e. war booty received without fight) which Allah will give us." On that, all the people said. 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) We have agreed willingly to do so (return the captives)" Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to them "I do not know who amongst you has agreed to this and who has not. You should return and let your leaders inform me of your agreement." The people returned and their leaders spoke to them, and then came to Allah's Apostle and said, "All the people have agreed willingly to do so and have given the permission to return the war prisoners (without Compensation)" (Az-Zuhri, the sub-narrator states) This is what has been related to us about the captives of Hawazin

Marwan bin Al-Hakam aur Miswar bin Makhrama bataate hain: Jab Hawazin qabile ka wafd Islam qubool karne ke baad Allah ke Rasool ke paas aaya aur unse apni jaidad aur qaidiyon ko wapas karne ki guzarish ki, Allah ke Rasool ne kaha, "Mujhe sabse achhi baat sabse sachi baat lagti hai, isliye tumhe do cheezon mein se ek chunne ka ikhtiyaar hai; qaidi ya daulat, kyunke maine unki taqseem taal di hai." Allah ke Rasool ne Taif se wapas aane ke baad das din se zyada unka intezaar kiya tha. Jab un logon ko pata chala ke Allah ke Rasool do cheezon mein se sirf ek hi wapas karenge, unhone kaha, "Hum apne qaidiyon ko chunte hain." Allah ke Rasool Musalmanon ke beech khade hue, aur Allah ki jaisi hamd honi chahiye vaisi ki, unhone kaha, "Iske baad, tumhare yeh bhai tauba karke humare paas aaye hain, aur mujhe theek lagta hai ke main unke qaidiyon ko unhe wapas karun, isliye jo bhi tum mein se aisa karna chahe ek ehsaan ke tor par, kar sakta hai, aur jo bhi apna hissa rakhna chahe, use apne qaidi chhodne honge aur hum use pahle Fai (yaani bina jung ke mile maal-e-ghanimat) se mua'wza denge jo Allah humein dega." Isspar sab logon ne kaha, "Ya Allah ke Rasool! Hum khushi se aisa (qaidiyon ko wapas) karne ke liye raazi hain." Phir Allah ke Rasool ne unse kaha, "Mujhe nahi pata tum mein se kisne raazi hokar diya aur kisne nahi. Isliye tum wapas jaao aur apne sardaron ko mujhe apni raazandi batane do." Log wapas gaye aur unke sardaron ne unse baat ki, phir Allah ke Rasool ke paas aaye aur kaha, "Sab logon ne khushi se raazi hokar (qaidiyon ko wapas karne ki) ijazat de di hai." (Az-Zuhri, doosre raawi ne kaha) Yeh humein Hawazin ke qaidiyon ke baare mein bataya gaya hai.
