Hadith text
Narrated Al-A`mash:I asked Abu Wail, "Did you take part in the battle of Siffin?" He said, 'Yes, and I heard Sahl bin Hunaif (when he was blamed for lack of zeal for fighting) saying, "You'd better blame your wrong opinions. I wish you had seen me on the day of Abu Jandal. If I had the courage to disobey the Prophet's orders, I would have done so. We had kept out swords on our necks and shoulders, for a thing which frightened us. And we did so, we found it easier for us, except in the case of the above battle (of ours)
Al-A'mash bataate hain: Maine Abu Wail se pucha, "Kya aap Siffin ki jung mein shaamil the?" Unhone kaha, "Haan, aur maine Sahl bin Hunaif ko (jab unhe jung mein utsaah ki kami ke liye doshi thahraaya gaya) yeh kehte suna, 'Behtar hai tum apne galat khyalon ko doshi thahrao. Kaash tumne mujhe Abu Jandal ke din dekha hota. Agar mujhme Nabi ke hukmon ki na-farmani karne ki himmat hoti, main aisa karta. Humne apni talwaren apni gardanon aur kandhon par rakhi thi kisi cheez ki wajah se jo humein daraee. Aur humne aisa kiya, humein yeh humare liye aasaan laga, siwaye is (Siffin ki) jung ke maamle mein.'"
