Hadith text
Narrated Abu Jamra:Ibn `Abbas said to us, "Shall I tell you the story of Abu Dhar's conversion to Islam?" We said, "Yes." He said, "Abu Dhar said: I was a man from the tribe of Ghifar. We heard that a man had appeared in Mecca, claiming to be a Prophet. I said to my brother, 'Go to that man and talk to him and bring me his news.' He set out, met him and returned. I asked him, 'What is the news with you?' He said, 'By Allah, I saw a man enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil.' I said to him, 'You have not satisfied me with this little information.' So, I took a waterskin and a stick and proceeded towards Mecca. Neither did I know him (i.e. the Prophet (ﷺ) ), nor did I like to ask anyone about him. I Kept on drinking Zam zam water and staying in the Mosque. Then `Ali passed by me and said, 'It seems you are a stranger?' I said, 'Yes.' He proceeded to his house and I accompanied him. Neither did he ask me anything, nor did I tell him anything. Next morning I went to the Mosque to ask about the Prophet but no-one told me anything about him. `Ali passed by me again and asked, 'Hasn't the man recognized his dwelling place yet' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Come along with me.' He asked me, 'What is your business? What has brought you to this town?' I said to him, 'If you keep my secret, I will tell you.' He said, 'I will do.' I said to him, 'We have heard that a person has appeared here, claiming to be a Prophet. I sent my brother to speak to him and when he returned, he did not bring a satisfactory report; so I thought of meeting him personally.' `Ali said (to Abu Dhar), 'You have reached your goal; I am going to him just now, so follow me, and wherever I enter, enter after me. If I should see someone who may cause you trouble, I will stand near a wall pretending to mend my shoes (as a warning), and you should go away then.' `Ali proceeded and I accompanied him till he entered a place, and I entered with him to the Prophet (ﷺ) to whom I said, 'Present (the principles of) Islam to me.' When he did, I embraced Islam 'immediately. He said to me, 'O Abu Dhar! Keep your conversion as a secret and return to your town; and when you hear of our victory, return to us. ' I said, 'By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, I will announce my conversion to Islam publicly amongst them (i.e. the infidels),' Abu Dhar went to the Mosque, where some people from Quraish were present, and said, 'O folk of Quraish ! I testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I (also) testify that Muhammad is Allah's Slave and His Apostle.' (Hearing that) the Quraishi men said, 'Get at this Sabi (i.e. Muslim) !' They got up and beat me nearly to death. Al `Abbas saw me and threw himself over me to protect me. He then faced them and said, 'Woe to you! You want to kill a man from the tribe of Ghifar, although your trade and your communications are through the territory of Ghifar?' They therefore left me. The next morning I returned (to the Mosque) and said the same as I had said on the previous day. They again said, 'Get at this Sabi!' I was treated in the same way as on the previous day, and again Al-Abbas found me and threw himself over me to protect me and told them the same as he had said the day before.' So, that was the conversion of Abu Dhar (may Allah be Merciful to him) to Islam
Abu Jamra bataate hain: Ibn Abbas ne humse kaha, "Kya main tumhe Abu Dharr ka Islam qubool karne ka kissa sunaun?" Humne kaha, "Haan." Unhone kaha, "Abu Dharr ne kaha: Main Ghifar qabile ka ek shaks tha. Humne suna ke Mecca mein ek shaks paida hua hai jo Nabi hone ka daava karta hai. Maine apne bhai se kaha, 'Us shaks ke paas jaao aur unse baat karo aur mujhe unki khabar lekar aao.' Woh gaye, unse mile, aur wapas aaye. Maine unse pucha, 'Tumhare paas kya khabar hai?' Unhone kaha, 'Allah ki qasam, maine ek aise shaks ko dekha jo achhaee ka hukum deta hai aur buraee se rokta hai.' Maine unse kaha, 'Tumne itni thodi jaankari se mujhe santusht nahi kiya.' Isliye maine ek paani ki mashk aur ek laathi liya aur Mecca ki taraf chal pada. Na main unhe (yaani Nabi ko) jaanta tha, na hi mujhe kisi se unke baare mein puchna achha laga. Main Zamzam ka paani pita raha aur masjid mein ruka raha. Phir Ali mere paas se guzre aur kaha, 'Lagta hai tum ek pardeshi ho?' Maine kaha, 'Haan.' Woh apne ghar chale gaye aur main unke saath gaya. Na unhone mujhse kuch pucha, na maine unhe kuch bataya. Agli subah main masjid gaya Nabi ke baare mein puchne, magar kisi ne mujhe unke baare mein kuch nahi bataya. Ali phir mere paas se guzre aur pucha, 'Kya us shaks ne abhi tak apna rehne ka thikana nahi paaya?' Maine kaha, 'Nahi.' Unhone kaha, 'Mere saath chalo.' Unhone mujhse pucha, 'Tumhara kya kaam hai? Tumhe is shehar mein kya laaya?' Maine unse kaha, 'Agar tum mera raaz rakhoge, main tumhe bataunga.' Unhone kaha, 'Main aisa hi karunga.' Maine unse kaha, 'Humne suna hai ke yahaan koi shaks aayi hai jo Nabi hone ka daava karta hai. Maine apne bhai ko unse baat karne bheja, aur jab woh wapas aaye, unka jawab santoshjanak nahi tha; isliye maine socha khud unse milna chahiye.' Ali ne (Abu Dharr se) kaha, 'Tum apni manzil tak pahunch gaye ho; main abhi unke paas ja raha hoon, isliye mere peeche chalo, aur jahaan bhi main daakhil hoon, tum bhi mere baad daakhil ho jaana. Agar mujhe koi aisa shaks dikhta hai jo tumhe pareshaan kar sakta hai, main deewaar ke paas khade hokar apna joota theek karne ka natak karunga (chetaaavni ke tor par), aur tumhe wahaan se chale jaana chahiye.' Ali chal pade aur main unke saath gaya jab tak woh ek jagah daakhil hue, aur main bhi unke saath Nabi ke paas gaya jinse maine kaha, 'Mujhe Islam (ke usulon) ka parichay dijiye.' Jab unhone diya, main foran Islam mein daakhil ho gaya. Unhone mujhse kaha, 'Aye Abu Dharr! Apne Islam qubool karne ko raaz rakho aur apne shehar wapas jaao; aur jab tum humari fatah ki khabar suno, wapas aa jaana.' Maine kaha, 'Us Zaat ki qasam jisne aapko Haqq ke saath bheja hai, main isse (yaani apne Islam qubool karne ko) khule-aam unke (yaani kaafiron ke) beech elaan karunga.' Abu Dharr masjid gaye, jahaan kuch Quraish log maujood the, aur kaha, 'Aye Quraish walo! Main gawahi deta hoon ke Allah ke siwa koi mabood nahi, aur main (bhi) gawahi deta hoon ke Muhammad Allah ke bande aur uske Rasool hain.' (Yeh sunkar) Quraishi logon ne kaha, 'Is Sabi (yaani Musalman) ko pakdo!' Woh khade hue aur mujhe maar-maar kar maut ke qareeb kar diya. Al-Abbas ne mujhe dekha aur mujhe bachane ke liye khud ko mujhpar daal diya. Phir woh unki taraf mude aur kaha, 'Afsos tum par! Tum Ghifar qabile ke ek shaks ko qatl karna chahte ho, jabke tumhara vyaapaar aur aane-jane ka raasta Ghifar ki sarzameen se hi hokar guzata hai?' Isliye unhone mujhe chhod diya. Agli subah main wapas gaya aur wahi kaha jo maine pichhle din kaha tha. Woh phir bole, 'Is Sabi ko pakdo!' Mere saath wahi suluk hua jo pichhle din hua tha, aur Al-Abbas ne phir mujhe dekha aur mujhe bachane ke liye khud ko mujhpar daal diya aur unhe wahi bataya jo unhone pichhle din kaha tha." Yehi Abu Dharr (Allah unpar reham kare) ka Islam qubool karna tha.
