Hadith text

Narrated `Uthman:(the son of Mawhab) An Egyptian who came and performed the Hajj to the Ka`ba saw some people sitting. He enquired, "Who are these people?" Somebody said, "They are the tribe of Quraish." He said, "Who is the old man sitting amongst them?" The people replied, "He is `Abdullah bin `Umar." He said, "O Ibn `Umar! I want to ask you about something; please tell me about it. Do you know that `Uthman fled away on the day (of the battle) of Uhud?" Ibn `Umar said, "Yes." The (Egyptian) man said, "Do you know that `Uthman was absent on the day (of the battle) of Badr and did not join it?" Ibn `Umar said, "Yes." The man said, "Do you know that he failed to attend the Ar Ridwan pledge and did not witness it (i.e. Hudaibiya pledge of allegiance)?" Ibn `Umar said, "Yes." The man said, "Allahu Akbar!" Ibn `Umar said, "Let me explain to you (all these three things). As for his flight on the day of Uhud, I testify that Allah has excused him and forgiven him; and as for his absence from the battle of Badr, it was due to the fact that the daughter of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was his wife and she was sick then. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to him, "You will receive the same reward and share (of the booty) as anyone of those who participated in the battle of Badr (if you stay with her).' As for his absence from the Ar-Ridwan pledge of allegiance, had there been any person in Mecca more respectable than `Uthman (to be sent as a representative). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) would have sent him instead of him. No doubt, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had sent him, and the incident of the Ar-Ridwan pledge of Allegiance happened after `Uthman had gone to Mecca. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) held out his right hand saying, 'This is `Uthman's hand.' He stroke his (other) hand with it saying, 'This (pledge of allegiance) is on the behalf of `Uthman.' Then Ibn `Umar said to the man, 'Bear (these) excuses in mind with you

Uthman (Mawhab ke bete) bataate hain: Ek Misri jo Hajj karne aaya, kuch logon ko baithe dekha. Usne pucha, "Yeh log kaun hain?" Kisi ne kaha, "Yeh Quraish qabile ke log hain." Usne pucha, "Unmein baitha boodha shaks kaun hai?" Logon ne jawab diya, "Woh Abdullah bin Umar hain." Usne kaha, "Aye Ibn Umar! Mujhe kuch puchna hai; kripya mujhe bataiye. Kya aap jaante hain ke Uthman Uhud ki jung ke din bhaag gaye the?" Ibn Umar ne kaha, "Haan." (Misri) shaks ne kaha, "Kya aap jaante hain ke Uthman Badr ki jung ke din maujood nahi the aur ismein shaamil nahi hue?" Ibn Umar ne kaha, "Haan." Shaks ne kaha, "Kya aap jaante hain ke woh Ar-Ridwan bai'at mein maujood nahi the aur ise dekh nahi paye (yaani Hudaibiya ki bai'at)?" Ibn Umar ne kaha, "Haan." Shaks ne kaha, "Allahu Akbar!" Ibn Umar ne kaha, "Mujhe (in teen baaton ko) samjhane do. Jahaan tak Uhud ke din unke bhaagne ka sawal hai, main gawahi deta hoon ke Allah ne unhe maaf kiya aur unhe kshama di; aur jahaan tak Badr ki jung se unke gair-haajir hone ka sawal hai, yeh isliye tha kyunke Allah ke Rasool ki beti unki biwi thi aur woh us waqt bimar thi. Allah ke Rasool ne unse kaha, 'Tumhe wahi ajr aur hissa (maal-e-ghanimat mein) milega jaisa Badr ki jung mein shaamil hone wale kisi ko milta' (agar tum unke saath raho). Aur jahaan tak Ar-Ridwan bai'at se unke gair-haajir hone ka sawal hai, agar Mecca mein Uthman se zyada izzatdaar koi shaks hota (pratinidhi ke tor par bhejne ke liye), Allah ke Rasool unhe unke bajaye bhejte. Beshak, Allah ke Rasool ne unhe bheja tha, aur Ar-Ridwan bai'at ki ghatna Uthman ke Mecca jane ke baad huee. Allah ke Rasool ne apna dahina haath badhkar kaha, 'Yeh Uthman ka haath hai.' Unhone apne (doosre) haath se ispar thapthapaya aur kaha, 'Yeh (bai'at) Uthman ki taraf se hai.'" Phir Ibn Umar ne us shaks se kaha, "Ab in uzron ko apne saath rakho."
