Hadith text

Narrated Abu Huraira:A man came to the Prophet. The Prophet (ﷺ) sent a messenger to his wives (to bring something for that man to eat) but they said that they had nothing except water. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Who will take this (person) or entertain him as a guest?" An Ansar man said, "I." So he took him to his wife and said to her, "Entertain generously the guest of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) " She said, "We have got nothing except the meals of my children." He said, "Prepare your meal, light your lamp and let your children sleep if they ask for supper." So she prepared her meal, lighted her lamp and made her children sleep, and then stood up pretending to mend her lamp, but she put it off. Then both of them pretended to be eating, but they really went to bed hungry. In the morning the Ansari went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) who said, "Tonight Allah laughed or wondered at your action." Then Allah revealed: "But give them (emigrants) preference over themselves even though they were in need of that And whosoever is saved from the covetousness Such are they who will be successful

Abu Huraira bataate hain: Ek shaks Nabi ke paas aaya. Nabi ne apni biwiyon ke paas ek paigaam bheja (use khilane ke liye kuch lane ke liye), magar unhonne kaha unke paas paani ke ilawa kuch nahi hai. Isspar Allah ke Rasool ne kaha, "Kaun ise (yaani is shaks ko) le jaayega ya mehmaan banaega?" Ek Ansaar shaks ne kaha, "Main." Isliye woh use apni biwi ke paas le gaye aur unse kaha, "Allah ke Rasool ke mehmaan ki bahut achhi sewa karo." Unhone kaha, "Humare paas mere bachchon ke khaane ke ilawa kuch nahi hai." Unhone kaha, "Apna khaana taiyaar karo, apni diyaan jalao, aur apne bachchon ko sula do agar woh raat ka khaana maangte hain." Isliye unhone apna khaana taiyaar kiya, diya jalaee, aur apne bachchon ko sulaya, aur phir uthkar apni diya theek karne ka natak kiya magar use bujha diya. Phir donon khate hone ka natak karte rahe, magar asal mein woh bhookhe soye. Subah, Ansaari Allah ke Rasool ke paas gaya jinhone kaha, "Aaj raat Allah ne tumhare amal par muskuraya ya hairat hui." Phir Allah ne yeh nazil kiya: "Magar unhe (yaani Muhajir ko) khud se zyada tarjih do chahe unhe khud zaroorat ho, Aur jo koi apne lalach se bacha liya jata hai, wahi log kaamyaab honge." (59:9)
