Hadith text

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:Zaid bin 'Amr bin Nufail went to Sham, inquiring about a true religion to follow. He met a Jewish religious scholar and asked him about their religion. He said, "I intend to embrace your religion, so tell me something about it." The Jew said, "You will not embrace our religion unless you receive your share of Allah's Anger." Zaid said, "'I do not run except from Allah's Anger, and I will never bear a bit of it if I have the power to avoid it. Can you tell me of some other religion?" He said, "I do not know any other religion except the Hanif." Zaid enquired, "What is Hanif?" He said, "Hanif is the religion of (the prophet) Abraham who was neither a Jew nor a Christian, and he used to worship None but Allah (Alone)" Then Zaid went out and met a Christian religious scholar and told him the same as before. The Christian said, "You will not embrace our religion unless you get a share of Allah's Curse." Zaid replied, "I do not run except from Allah's Curse, and I will never bear any of Allah's Curse and His Anger if I have the power to avoid them. Will you tell me of some other religion?" He replied, "I do not know any other religion except Hanif." Zaid enquired, "What is Hanif?" He replied, Hanif is the religion of (the prophet) Abraham who was neither a Jew nor a Christian and he used to worship None but Allah (Alone)" When Zaid heard their Statement about (the religion of) Abraham, he left that place, and when he came out, he raised both his hands and said, "O Allah! I make You my Witness that I am on the religion of Abraham

Ibn Umar bataate hain: Zaid bin Amr bin Nufail Sham gaye, ek sachche deen ke baare mein poochte hue jiski woh pairvi kar saken. Unki mulaqaat ek Yahudi deeni gyaani se hui aur unse unke deen ke baare mein pucha. Unhone kaha, "Main tumhara deen apnana chahta hoon, isliye mujhe iske baare mein kuch bataiye." Yahudi ne kaha, "Tum humara deen tab tak nahi apna sakte jab tak tum Allah ke gusse ka hissa na le lo." Zaid ne kaha, "Main sirf Allah ke gusse se hi bhaagta hoon, aur main kabhi uska ek ansh bhi nahi bardaasht karunga agar main ise taalne ki taakat rakhta hoon. Kya aap mujhe kisi aur deen ke baare mein bata sakte hain?" Unhone kaha, "Main Hanif ke ilawa koi doosra deen nahi jaanta." Zaid ne pucha, "Hanif kya hai?" Unhone kaha, "Hanif Ibrahim ka deen hai, jo na Yahudi the na Isaee, aur woh sirf Allah (akele) ki ibadat karte the." Phir Zaid nikle aur ek Isaee deeni gyaani se mile aur unse wahi bataya jo pahle kaha tha. Isaee ne kaha, "Tum humara deen tab tak nahi apna sakte jab tak tum Allah ki laanat ka hissa na le lo." Zaid ne jawab diya, "Main sirf Allah ki laanat se bhaagta hoon, aur main kabhi Allah ki laanat aur uske gusse ka koi hissa bardaasht nahi karunga agar main ise taalne ki taakat rakhta hoon. Kya aap mujhe kisi aur deen ke baare mein bataenge?" Unhone jawab diya, "Main Hanif ke ilawa koi doosra deen nahi jaanta." Zaid ne pucha, "Hanif kya hai?" Unhone jawab diya, "Hanif Ibrahim ka deen hai, jo na Yahudi the na Isaee aur sirf Allah (akele) ki ibadat karte the." Jab Zaid ne unke (Ibrahim ke deen ke baare mein) bayaan suna, woh wahaan se chale gaye, aur jab woh bahar aaye, unhone apne donon haath uthaye aur kaha, "Aye Allah! Main tujhe gawaah banata hoon ke main Ibrahim ke deen par hoon."
