Sahih al-Bukhari 3850

Hadith text

Narrated Sufyan:'Ubaidullah said: "I heard Ibn `Abbas saying, "Following are some traits of the people of the pre- Islamic period of ignorance (i) to defame the ancestry of other families, (ii) and to wail over the dead." 'Ubaidullah forgot the third trait. Sufyan said, "They say it (i.e. the third trait) was to believe that rain was caused by the influence of stars (i.e. if a special star appears it will rain)

Ubaidullah bataate hain: Maine Ibn Abbas ko kehte suna, "Yeh kuchh lakshan hain jahiliyat ke daur ke logon ke: (i) doosre pariwaron ke vansh ki ninda karna, (ii) aur murdon par matam (yaani zor se rona aur maatam manaana)." Ubaidullah teesra lakshan bhool gaye. Sufyan ne kaha, "Woh kahte hain (teesra lakshan) yeh maanna tha ke barish sitaron ke prabhaav se hoti hai (yaani agar ek khaas sitara dikhaee de, barish hogi)."
