Hadith text

Narrated Anas:That the Prophet (ﷺ) sent his uncle, the brother of Um Sulaim at the head of seventy riders. The chief of the pagans, 'Amir bin at-Tufail proposed three suggestions (to the Prophet (ﷺ) ) saying, "Choose one of three alternatives: (1) that the bedouins will be under your command and the townspeople will be under my command; (2) or that I will be your successor, (3) or otherwise I will attack you with two thousand from Bani Ghatafan." But 'Amir was infected with plague in the House of Um so-and-so. He said, "Shall I stay in the house of a lady from the family of so-and-so after having a (swelled) gland like that she-camel? Get me my horse." So he died on the back of his horse. Then Haram, the brother of Um Sulaim and a lame man along with another man from so-and-so (tribe) went towards the pagans (i.e. the tribe of 'Amir). Haram said (to his companions), "Stay near to me, for I will go to them. If they (i.e. infidels) should give me protection, you will be near to me, and if they should kill me, then you should go back to your companions. Then Haram went to them and said, "Will you give me protection so as to convey the message of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ?" So, he started talking to them' but they signalled to a man (to kill him) and he went behind him and stabbed him (with a spear). He (i.e. Haram) said, "Allahu Akbar! I have succeeded, by the Lord of the Ka`ba!" The companion of Haram was pursued by the infidels, and then they (i.e. Haram's companions) were all killed except the lame man who was at the top of a mountain. Then Allah revealed to us a verse that was among the cancelled ones later on. It was: 'We have met our Lord and He is pleased with us and has made us pleased.' (After this event) the Prophet (ﷺ) invoked evil on the infidels every morning for 30 days. He invoked evil upon the (tribes of) Ril, Dhakwan, Bani Lihyan and Usaiya who disobeyed Allah and His Apostle

Anas bataate hain: Nabi ne apne chacha, Um Sulaim ke bhai, ko sattar sawaron ke saath bheja. Mushrikon ke sardaar, Amir bin At-Tufail, ne teen sujhaav diye (Nabi se kehte huye): "Teen sujhaavon mein se ek chuniye: (1) dehati log aapke adhin honge aur shehari log mere adhin; (2) ya main aapka jaanshin banunga; (3) warna main aappar Banu Ghatafan se do hazaar logon ke saath hamla karunga." Magar Amir ko talaee ho gaee Um falaan-falaan ke ghar mein. Unhone kaha, "Kya main falaan pariwara ki ek mahilla ke ghar mein rahoon aisi (soojee hui) granthi ke saath jaise us untni ki hoti hai? Mera ghoda lao." Isliye unka intiqal apne ghode ki peeth par hi ho gaya. Phir Haram, Um Sulaim ke bhai, ek langde shaks ke saath, aur ek aur shaks (falaan qabile se), mushrikon (yaani Amir ki qaum) ki taraf gaye. Haram ne (apne sathiyon se) kaha, "Mere qareeb raho, kyunke main unke paas jaunga. Agar woh mujhe panah dete hain, tum mere qareeb hoge, aur agar woh mujhe qatl karte hain, phir tumhe apne sathiyon ke paas wapas jana chahiye." Phir Haram unke paas gaye aur kaha, "Kya aap mujhe panah denge taaki main Allah ke Rasool ka paighaam pahunchan sakoon?" Isliye woh unse baat karne lage, magar unhone ek shaks ko ishara kiya (unhe qatl karne ke liye) aur woh unke peeche gaya aur unhe (ek bhaale se) chubhaya. Unhone (yaani Haram ne) kaha, "Allahu Akbar! Ka'ba ke Rab ki qasam, main kaamyaab hua!" Haram ke sathi ka picha kaafiron ne kiya, aur phir woh (yaani Haram ke sathi) sab qatl kiye gaye siwaye us langde shaks ke jo ek pahad ki choti par tha. Phir Allah ne humare liye ek Ayat naazil ki jo baad mein radd kar di gaee. Yeh thi: 'Hum apne Rab se mile hain aur woh humse khush hai aur usne humein khush kiya hai.' (Is ghatna ke baad) Nabi ne tees din tak har subah kaafiron ke khilaf bad-dua ki. Unhone (qabile) Ril, Dhakwan, Bani Lihyan, aur Usaiya ke khilaf bad-dua ki, jinhone Allah aur uske Rasool ki na-farmani ki.
