Sahih al-Bukhari 4108

Hadith text

Narrated `Ikrima bin Khalid:Ibn `Umar said, "I went to Hafsa while water was dribbling from her twined braids. I said, 'The condition of the people is as you see, and no authority has been given to me.' Hafsa said, (to me), 'Go to them, and as they (i.e. the people) are waiting for you, and I am afraid your absence from them will produce division amongst them.' " So Hafsa did not leave Ibn `Umar till we went to them. When the people differed. Muawiya addressed the people saying, "'If anybody wants to say anything in this matter of the Caliphate, he should show up and not conceal himself, for we are more rightful to be a Caliph than he and his father." On that, Habib bin Masalama said (to Ibn `Umar), "Why don't you reply to him (i.e. Muawiya)?" `Abdullah bin `Umar said, "I untied my garment that was going round my back and legs while I was sitting and was about to say, 'He who fought against you and against your father for the sake of Islam, is more rightful to be a Caliph,' but I was afraid that my statement might produce differences amongst the people and cause bloodshed, and my statement might be interpreted not as I intended. (So I kept quiet) remembering what Allah has prepared in the Gardens of Paradise (for those who are patient and prefer the Hereafter to this worldly life)." Habib said, "You did what kept you safe and secure (i.e. you were wise in doing so)

Ikrima bin Khalid bataate hain: Ibn Umar ne kaha, "Main Hafsa ke paas gaya jabke unki gundhi hui chotiyon se paani tapak raha tha. Maine kaha, 'Logon ki sthiti waisi hi hai jaisi aap dekh rahi hain, aur mujhe koee adhikaar nahi diya gaya hai.' Hafsa ne kaha, 'Unke paas jao, kyunke woh (yaani log) aapka intezaar kar rahe hain, aur mujhe dar hai ke aapki unse gair-hazari unke beech phoot daal degi.'" Isliye Hafsa ne Ibn Umar ko tab tak nahi chhoda jab tak hum unke paas nahi gaye. Jab logon mein mataferq huee, Muawiya ne logon ko sambodhit karte huye kaha, "Agar koee is Khilafat ke maamle mein kuch kehna chahta hai, use saamne anaa chahiye, chhupna nahi chahiye, kyunke hum unse aur unke waalid se zyada Khalifa banne ke haqdaar hain." Ispar, Habib bin Masalama ne (Ibn Umar se) kaha, "Aap unhe (yaani Muawiya ko) jawab kyun nahi dete?" Abdullah bin Umar ne kaha, "Maine apna kapda khola jo mere peeth aur taangon ke gird lipeta hua tha jabke main baitha tha, aur maine kehne hi wala tha, 'Jisne Islam ki khaatir aapke aur aapke waalid ke khilaf jung ki, woh Khalifa banne ka zyada haqdaar hai,' magar mujhe dar tha ke meri baat logon ke beech mataferq paida kar degi aur khoonkharaba ka kaaran banegi, aur meri baat galat tarike se samjhi ja sakti hai (jaisa maine nahi socha). (Isliye main chup raha) yaad karte huye jo Allah ne Jannat ke baagon mein rakha hai (unke liye jo sabr karte hain aur is duniyavi zindagi se Aakhirat ko tarjih dete hain)." Habib ne kaha, "Aapne woh kiya jisse aap surakshit aur bache rahe (yaani aapne bahut samajhdaari se kaam liya)."
