Sahih al-Bukhari 4261

Hadith text

Abdullah bin `Umar said:"Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) appointed Zaid bin Haritha as the commander of the army during the Ghazwa of Mu'tah and said, "If Zaid is martyred, Ja`far should take over his position, and if Ja`far is martyred, `Abdullah bin Rawaha should take over his position.' " `Abdullah bin `Umar further said, "I was present amongst them in that battle and we searched for Ja`far bin Abi Talib and found his body amongst the bodies of the martyred ones, and found over ninety wounds over his body, caused by stabs or shots (of arrows)

Abdullah bin Umar bataate hain: Allah ke Rasool ne Zaid bin Haritha ko Mu'tah ki jung ke dauran fauj ka kamandar muqarrar kiya aur kaha, "Agar Zaid shaheed ho jaen, Ja'far unki jagah sambhale, aur agar Ja'far shaheed ho jaen, Abdullah bin Rawaha unki jagah sambhale." Abdullah bin Umar ne aage kaha, "Main us jung mein unke saath maujood tha aur humne Ja'far bin Abi Talib ko dhoondha aur unka jism shaheed logon ke jismon ke beech paaya, aur unke jism par nabbe se zyada zakhm paaye, chaaku ya teeron ki wajah se."
