Hadith text
Narrated Marwan and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama:When the delegate of Hawazin came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) declaring their conversion to Islam and asked him to return their properties and captives, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up and said to them, "There Is involved in this matter, the people whom you see with me, and the most beloved talk to me, is the true one. So choose one of two alternatives: Either the captives or the properties. I have been waiting for you (i.e. have not distributed the booty)." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had delayed the distribution of their booty over ten nights after his return from Ta'if. So when they came to know that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was not going to return to them but one of the two, they said, "We prefer to have our captives." So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up amongst the Muslims, and praising Allah as He deserved, said, "To proceed! Your brothers have come to you with repentance and I see (it logical) to return their captives. So, whoever of you likes to do that as a favor then he can do it. And whoever of you likes to stick to his share till we give him from the very first booty which Allah will give us, then he can do so." The people said, "We do that (i.e. return the captives) willingly as a favor, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "We do not know which of you have agreed to it and which have not; so go back and let your chiefs forward us your decision." They went back and their chief's spoke to them, and they (i.e. the chiefs) returned to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and informed him that all of them had agreed (to give up their captives) with pleasure, and had given their permission (i.e. that the captives be returned to their people). (The sub-narrator said, "That is what has reached me about the captives of Hawazin tribe)
Marwan aur Al-Miswar bin Makhrama bataate hain: Jab Hawazin ka pratinidhimandal Allah ke Rasool ke paas aaya, Islam qubool karne ka elaan karte huye aur apni jaidad aur qaidiyon ko wapas maangte huye, Allah ke Rasool uthe aur unse kaha, "Is maamle mein log shaamil hain jinhe tum mere saath dekh rahe ho, aur mere liye sabse pyari baat woh hai jo sachchi ho. Isliye do vikalpon mein se ek chuniye: ya to qaidi ya jaidad. Main tumhara intezaar kar raha hoon (yaani maine maal-e-ghanimat abhi taqseem nahi ki)." Allah ke Rasool ne Taif se wapasi ke baad das raaton tak unki maal-e-ghanimat ki taqseem ko deri se rakha tha. Isliye jab unhe pata chala ke Allah ke Rasool unhe donon nahi, balki sirf ek denge, unhone kaha, "Hum apne qaidiyon ko tarjih dete hain." Isliye Allah ke Rasool Musalmanon ke beech uthe, aur Allah ki taarif jitni woh laayak hai karke, kaha, "Iske baad! Tumhare bhaee tauba ke saath tumhare paas aaye hain aur mujhe (yeh) lagta hai ke main unke qaidi unhe wapas dese lautaun. Isliye tum mein se jo koee ise ek ehsaan ke tor par karna chahta hai, woh aisa kar sakta hai. Aur jo koee apna hissa tab tak rakhna chahta hai jab tak hum unhe pahli hi maal-e-ghanimat mein se de nahi dete jo Allah humein dega, phir woh aisa kar sakta hai." Logon ne kaha, "Hum aisa (yaani qaidiyon ko wapas karna) khushi se karte hain, Aye Allah ke Rasool!" Allah ke Rasool ne kaha, "Humein nahi pata tummein se kaun isse sahmat hai aur kaun nahi; isliye wapas jao aur apne sardaron ko humare paas humara faisla bhejne do." Woh wapas gaye aur unke sardaron ne unse baat ki, aur woh (yaani sardaar) Allah ke Rasool ke paas wapas aaye aur unhe bataya ke sab ne khushi se sahmati di thi (qaidiyon ko chhodne ki), aur ijazat di thi. (Subordinate raawi ne kaha, "Yehi mujhtak pahuncha hai Hawazin qabile ke qaidiyon ke baare mein.")
