Hadith text

Narrated Al-Aswad:While we were sitting in a circle in `Abdullah's gathering, Hudhaifa came and stopped before us, and greeted us and then said, "People better than you became hypocrites." Al-Aswad said: I testify the uniqueness of Allah! Allah says: "Verily! The hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire." (4.145) On that `Abdullah smiled and Hudhaifa sat somewhere in the Mosque. `Abdullah then got up and his companions (sitting around him) dispersed. Hudhaifa then threw a pebble at me (to attract my attention). I went to him and he said, "I was surprised at `Abdullah's smile though he understood what I said. Verily, people better than you became hypocrites and then repented and Allah forgave them

Al-Aswad bataate hain: Jab hum Abdullah (bin Masud) ki majlis mein ghera banaakar baithe the, Hudhaifa aaye aur hamare saamne ruk gaye, salaam kiya, aur kaha, 'Tum se behtar log bhi munaafiq ban gaye the.' Al-Aswad ne kaha, 'Main Allah ki wahdaniyat ki gawaahi deta hoon! Allah farmaata hai: "Beshak munaafiq Jahannam ke sabse neeche gaddhe mein honge." (4:145)' Isper Abdullah muskuraaye aur Hudhaifa Masjid mein kahin baith gaye. Phir Abdullah uthe aur unke saathi bhi (majlis se) alag ho gaye. Hudhaifa ne (mera dhyan kheenchne ke liye) mere paas ek kankar phenka. Main unke paas gaya to unhone kaha, 'Mujhe Abdullah ki muskuraahat par hairaani hui, jabke unhe pata tha maine kya kaha. Beshak tum se behtar log bhi munaafiq ban gaye the, phir unhone tauba ki aur Allah ne unhe maaf kar diya.'
