Hadith text
Narrated `Umar bin Al-Khattab:When `Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul died, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was called in order to offer the funeral prayer for him. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up (to offer the prayer) I jumped towards him and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Do you offer the prayer for Ibn Ubai although he said so-and-so on such-and-such-a day?" I went on mentioning his sayings. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) smiled and said, "Keep away from me, O `Umar!" But when I spoke too much to him, he said, "I have been given the choice, and I have chosen (this) ; and if I knew that if I asked forgiveness for him more than seventy times, he would be forgiven, I would ask it for more times than that." So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) offered the funeral prayer for him and then left, but he did not stay long before the two Verses of Surat-Bara'a were revealed, i.e.:-- 'And never (O Muhammad) pray for anyone of them that dies.... and died in a state of rebellion.' (9.84) Later I was astonished at my daring to speak like that to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and Allah and His Apostle know best
Umar bin Al-Khattab bataate hain: Jab Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul mar gaya, to Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ko uski janaaza ki namaz padhaane ke liye bulaaya gaya. Jab Allah ke Rasool (SAW) (namaz padhaane) khade hue, to main unki taraf lapka aur kaha, 'Aye Allah ke Rasool! Kya aap Ibn Ubai ki namaz padhaayenge, jabke usne falaan din aisi aisi baat kahi thi?' Aur main uski baaton ka zikr karta gaya. Allah ke Rasool (SAW) muskuraaye aur kaha, 'Aye Umar! Mujhse door raho.' Magar jab maine bahut zyaada bolna jaari rakha, to unhone farmaya, 'Mujhe ikhtiyaar diya gaya hai, aur maine (ye) chun liya hai; agar mujhe pata hota ke agar main sattar se zyaada baar uske liye maafi maangoon to use maaf kar diya jaayega, to main usse bhi zyaada baar maangta.' To Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne uski janaaza ki namaz padhaayi aur phir wahaan se chale gaye, magar zyaada der nahi guzri thi ke Surah Bara'a ki do Aayaten naazil hui, yaani: 'Aur (Aye Muhammad) unmein se kisi ke marne par kabhi namaz mat padho... jinhone sarkashi ki haalat mein wafat paayi.' (9:84) Baad mein mujhe khud hairaani hoti thi ke maine Allah ke Rasool (SAW) se is tarah kaise bol diya tha, aur Allah aur uske Rasool hi behtar jaante hain.
