Narrated Aisha:When there was said about me what was said which I myself was unaware of, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up and addressed the people. He recited Tashah-hud, and after glorifying and praising Allah as He deserved, he said, "To proceed: O people Give me your opinion regarding those people who made a forged story against my wife. By Allah, I do not know anything bad about her. By Allah, they accused her of being with a man about whom I have never known anything bad, and he never entered my house unless I was present there, and whenever I went on a journey, he went with me." Sa`d bin Mu`adh got up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) Allow me to chop their heads off". Then a man from the Al-Khazraj (Sa`d bin 'Ubada) to whom the mother of (the poet) Hassan bin Thabit was a relative, got up and said (to Sa`d bin Mu`adh), "You have told a lie! By Allah, if those persons were from the Aus Tribe, you would not like to chop their heads off." It was probable that some evil would take place between the Aus and the Khazraj in the mosque, and I was unaware of all that. In the evening of that day, I went out for some of my needs (i.e. to relieve myself), and Um Mistah was accompanying me. On our return, Um Mistah stumbled and said, "Let Mistah. be ruined" I said to her, "O mother Why do you abuse your Son" On that Um Mistah became silent for a while, and stumbling again, she said, "Let Mistah be ruined" I said to her, "Why do you abuse your son?" She stumbled for the third time and said, "Let Mistah be ruined" whereupon I rebuked her for that. She said, "By Allah, I do not abuse him except because of you." I asked her, "Concerning what of my affairs?" So she disclosed the whole story to me. I said, "Has this really happened?" She replied, "Yes, by Allah." I returned to my house, astonished (and distressed) that I did not know for what purpose I had gone out. Then I became sick (fever) and said to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) "Send me to my father's house." So he sent a slave with me, and when I entered the house, I found Um Rum-an (my mother) downstairs while (my father) Abu Bakr was reciting something upstairs. My mother asked, "What has brought you, O (my) daughter?" I informed her and mentioned to her the whole story, but she did not feel it as I did. She said, "O my daughter! Take it easy, for there is never a charming lady loved by her husband who has other wives but that they feel jealous of her and speak badly of her." But she did not feel the news as I did. I asked (her), "Does my father know about it?" She said, "yes" I asked, Does Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) know about it too?" She said, "Yes, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) does too." So the tears filled my eyes and I wept. Abu Bakr, who was reading upstairs heard my voice and came down and asked my mother, "What is the matter with her? " She said, "She has heard what has been said about her (as regards the story of Al-Ifk)." On that Abu- Bakr wept and said, "I beseech you by Allah, O my daughter, to go back to your home". I went back to my home and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had come to my house and asked my maid-servant about me (my character). The maid-servant said, "By Allah, I do not know of any defect in her character except that she sleeps and let the sheep enter (her house) and eat her dough." On that, some of the Prophet's companions spoke harshly to her and said, "Tell the truth to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." Finally they told her of the affair (of the slander). She said, "Subhan Allah! By Allah, I know nothing against her except what goldsmith knows about a piece of pure gold." Then this news reached the man who was accused, and he said, "Subhan Allah! By Allah, I have never uncovered the private parts of any woman." Later that man was martyred in Allah's Cause. Next morning my parents came to pay me a visit and they stayed with me till Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to me after he had offered the `Asr prayer. He came to me while my parents were sitting around me on my right and my left. He praised and glorified Allah and said, "Now then O `Aisha! If you have committed a bad deed or you have wronged (yourself), then repent to Allah as Allah accepts the repentance from his slaves." An Ansari woman had come and was sitting near the gate. I said (to the Prophet), "Isn't it improper that you speak in such a way in the presence of this lady? Allah's Apostle then gave a piece of advice and I turned to my father and requested him to answer him (on my behalf). My father said, "What should I say?" Then I turned to my mother and asked her to answer him. She said, "What should I say?" When my parents did not give a reply to the Prophet, I said, "I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Apostle!" And after praising and glorifying Allah as He deserves, I said, "Now then, by Allah, if I were to tell you that I have not done (this evil action) and Allah is a witness that I am telling the truth, that would not be of any use to me on your part because you (people) have spoken about it and your hearts have absorbed it; and if I were to tell you that I have done this sin and Allah knows that I have not done it, then you will say, 'She has confessed herself guilty." By Allah, 'I do not see a suitable example for me and you but the example of (I tried to remember Jacob's name but couldn't) Joseph's father when he said; So (for me) "Patience is most fitting against that which you assert. It is Allah (alone) whose help can be sought.' At that very hour the Divine Inspiration came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and we remained silent. Then the Inspiration was over and I noticed the signs of happiness on his face while he was removing (the sweat) from his forehead and saying, "Have the good tidings O ' "Aisha! Allah has revealed your innocence." At that time I was extremely angry. My parents said to me, "Get up and go to him." I said, "By Allah, I will not do it and will not thank him nor thank either of you, but I will thank Allah Who has revealed my innocence. You have heard this story but neither did not deny it nor change it (to defend me)." (Aisha used to say:) "But as regards Zainab bint Jahsh, (the Prophet's wife), Allah protected her because of her piety, so she did not say anything except good (about me), but her sister, Hamna, was ruined among those who were ruined. Those who used to speak evil about me were Mistah, Hassan bin Thabit, and the hypocrite, `Abdullah bin Ubai, who used to spread that news and tempt others to speak of it, and it was he and Hamna who had the greater share therein. Abu Bakr took an oath that he would never do any favor to Mistah at all. Then Allah revealed the Divine Verse: "Let not those among you who are good and wealthy (i.e. Abu Bakr) swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kinsmen, and those in need, (i.e. Mistah) ...Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (24.22) On that, Abu Bakr said, "Yes, by Allah, O our Lord! We wish that You should forgive us." Aisha bataati hain: Jab mere baare mein wo baat kahi gayi jiska mujhe khud pata nahi tha, Allah ke Rasool (SAW) khade hue aur logon se khitaab kiya. Unhone Tashahhud padha, Allah ki jitni tareef ki jaani chaahiye utni ki, phir farmaya, 'Aage: Aye logo! Mujhe un logon ke baare mein apni raay do jinhone meri biwi ke khilaaf jhooti baat ghadi hai. Allah ki qasam, mujhe unke baare mein achhi baat ke siwa kuch nahi pata. Aur Allah ki qasam, unhone unhein ek aise mard ke saath jodkar tohmat lagaayi hai jiske baare mein bhi mujhe achhi baat ke siwa kabhi kuch nahi pata, aur wo mere ghar mein mere bagair kabhi nahi aata tha, aur jab bhi main safar par jaata, wo mere saath jaata tha.' Sa'd bin Mu'adh khade hue aur kaha, 'Aye Allah ke Rasool! Mujhe ijaazat dijiye ke main unke sar kaat doon.' Phir Khazraj qabeele ka ek shaks (Sa'd bin Ubada), jiski Hassan bin Thabit (shaayar) ki maa se rishtedaari thi, khade hue aur (Sa'd bin Mu'adh se) kaha, 'Tumne jhoot bola! Allah ki qasam, agar ye log Aus qabeele se hote, to tumhein unke sar kaatna pasand na aata.' Aisar aur Khazraj ke darmiyaan Masjid mein koi buri baat ho sakti thi, aur mujhe iska kuch bhi pata nahi tha. Us din shaam ko, main apni zaroorat ke liye baahar gayi (yaani qaza-e-haajat ke liye), aur Umm Mistah mere saath thi. Wapas aate waqt Umm Mistah thokar khaakar giri aur usne kaha, 'Mistah barbaad ho.' Maine usse kaha, 'Aye ammi! Aap apne bete ko bura kyun kehti hain?' Isper Umm Mistah kuch der khaamosh rahi, phir dobara thokar khaakar usne kaha, 'Mistah barbaad ho.' Maine phir kaha, 'Aap apne bete ko bura kyun kehti hain?' Teesri baar bhi thokar khaakar usne kaha, 'Mistah barbaad ho,' isper maine use daanta. Usne kaha, 'Allah ki qasam, main use sirf tumhaari wajah se bura kehti hoon.' Maine poocha, 'Mere kis maamle ki wajah se?' To usne mujhe poori baat bataayi. Maine poocha, 'Kya waaqai aisa hua?' Usne kaha, 'Haan, Allah ki qasam.' Main apne ghar wapas aayi, hairaan aur pareshaan, mujhe ye bhi yaad nahi tha ke main kis kaam se baahar nikli thi. Phir mujhe bukhaar aa gaya aur maine Allah ke Rasool (SAW) se kaha, 'Mujhe mere waalid ke ghar bhej dijiye.' To unhone ek ghulaam ke saath mujhe bhej diya, aur jab main ghar pahunchi, to maine Umm Ruman (meri maa) ko neeche paaya jabke (mere waalid) Abu Bakr upar kuch padh rahe the. Meri maa ne poocha, 'Kya baat hai, aye meri beti?' Maine unhein poori baat bataayi, magar unhone isse waisa mehsoos nahi kiya jaisa maine kiya tha. Unhone kaha, 'Aye meri beti! Isse halka lo, kyunke koi bhi khoobsurat aurat, jise uska shohar chaahta ho aur uski aur biwiyaan bhi hon, to wo unse jalti hain aur uske baare mein bura kehti hain.' Magar unhone bhi khabar ko waisa mehsoos nahi kiya jaisa maine kiya. Maine poocha, 'Kya mere waalid ko iska pata hai?' Unhone kaha, 'Haan.' Maine poocha, 'Kya Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ko bhi pata hai?' Unhone kaha, 'Haan, Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ko bhi pata hai.' To meri aankhon mein aansu bhar aaye aur main rone lagi. Abu Bakr, jo upar padh rahe the, meri aawaaz sunkar neeche aaye aur meri maa se poocha, 'Isko kya hua hai?' Unhone kaha, 'Isne Ifk ke baare mein jo kaha gaya wo sun liya hai.' Isper Abu Bakr ro pade aur kaha, 'Main tumhein Allah ki qasam deta hoon, aye meri beti, apne ghar wapas jao.' Main apne ghar wapas gayi aur Allah ke Rasool (SAW) mere ghar aa chuke the aur meri khaadima se mere baare mein pucha tha. Khaadima ne kaha, 'Allah ki qasam, mujhe unmein koi buraai nahi maloom, siwaaye ye ke wo so jaati hain aur bakriyon ko andar aa kar unka aata khaane dete hain.' Isper Nabi (SAW) ke kuch sahaaba ne usse sakhti se kaha, 'Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ko sach batao.' Aakhir unhone usse (tohmat ki) poori baat bataayi. Usne kaha, 'Subhan-Allah! Allah ki qasam, mujhe unke baare mein utna hi pata hai jitna sunaar khaalis sone ke baare mein jaanta hai.' Phir ye khabar us aadmi tak pahunchi jispar ilzaam lagaaya gaya tha, usne kaha, 'Subhan-Allah! Allah ki qasam, maine kabhi kisi aurat ka parda nahi khola.' Baad mein wo shaks Allah ki raah mein shaheed ho gaya. Agli subah mere waalidain mujhse milne aaye aur mere paas rahe yahaan tak ke Allah ke Rasool (SAW) Asr ki namaz padhne ke baad mere paas aaye. Wo mere paas aaye jabke mere waalidain mere daayen aur baayen baithe the. Unhone Allah ki tareef aur azmat bayaan ki aur farmaya, 'Ab, Aye Aisha! Agar tumse koi bura kaam hua hai ya tumne apne aap par zulm kiya hai, to Allah se tauba karo, kyunke Allah apne bandon ki tauba qubool karta hai.' Ek Ansaari aurat aayi thi aur darwaaze ke paas baithi thi. Maine (Nabi se) kaha, 'Kya ye theek nahi ke aap is khaatoon ki maujoodgi mein aisi baat karein?' Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne phir naseehat ki, aur main apne waalid ki taraf mudi aur unse darkhwaast ki ke wo (mere taraf se) jawab dein. Mere waalid ne kaha, 'Mujhe kya kehna chaahiye?' Phir maine apni maa se kaha jawab dene ko. Unhone kaha, 'Mujhe kya kehna chaahiye?' Jab mere waalidain ne Nabi (SAW) ko jawab nahi diya, to maine khud kaha, 'Main gawaahi deti hoon ke Allah ke siwa koi ibaadat ke laayak nahi, aur Muhammad uske Rasool hain!' Aur Allah ki jitni tareef ki jaani chaahiye utni karne ke baad, maine kaha, 'Ab, Allah ki qasam, agar main aapko kahoon ke maine ye (bura kaam) nahi kiya, aur Allah gawaah hai ke main sach keh rahi hoon, to iska aapke saamne koi faayda nahi hoga kyunke aap logon ne ye baat kahi hai aur aapke dilon ne isse qubool kar liya hai; aur agar main kahoon ke maine ye gunaah kiya hai, jabke Allah jaanta hai ke maine nahi kiya, to aap kahenge, "Usne khud apna gunaah maan liya." Allah ki qasam, mujhe apne aur aapke liye - (maine Yaqub ka naam yaad karne ki koshish ki magar yaad nahi aaya) - Yusuf ke waalid ke siwa koi misaal nahi milti jab unhone kaha tha: "To (mere liye) sabar hi behtar hai us baat ke khilaaf jo tum bayaan karte ho. Aur Allah hi hai jiski madad maangi jaa sakti hai."' Usi waqt Allah ke Rasool (SAW) par wahi naazil hone lagi aur hum khaamosh rahe. Phir wahi khatam hui aur maine unke chehre par khushi ke asaar dekhe jabke wo apni peshaani se (paseena) pochh rahe the aur kaha, 'Khush-khabri ho, Aye Aisha! Allah ne tumhaari be-gunaahi zaahir kar di hai.' Us waqt main bahut naaraaz thi. Mere waalidain ne mujhse kaha, 'Utho aur unke paas jao.' Maine kaha, 'Allah ki qasam, main aisa nahi karungi, aur na unka na tum dono ka shukriya ada karungi, balke sirf Allah ka shukriya ada karungi jisne meri be-gunaahi zaahir ki hai. Tumne ye baat suni thi lekin na to isse jhutlaaya na hi (mere haq mein) badla.' (Aisha kaha karti thin:) Lekin Zainab bint Jahsh (Nabi ki biwi) ke maamle mein, Allah ne unhein unki parhezgaari ki wajah se bacha liya, isliye unhone (mere baare mein) achhi baat ke siwa kuch nahi kaha, magar unki behen, Hamna, unhi logon mein tabaah ho gayi jo tabaah hue the. Jo log mere baare mein bura kaha karte the wo the Mistah, Hassan bin Thabit, aur munaafiq Abdullah bin Ubai, jo ye khabar failaata aur doosron ko usmein hissa lene ke liye ubhaarta tha, aur usi aur Hamna ne isme sabse bada hissa liya tha. Abu Bakr ne qasam khaayi ke wo Mistah ke liye kabhi koi ehsaan nahi karenge. Phir Allah ne ye Aayat naazil ki: 'Aur tum mein se jo fazl aur daulat wale hain (yaani Abu Bakr), wo apne rishtedaaron aur zaroorat-manon (yaani Mistah) ki madad na karne ki qasam na khaayein... Kya tum nahi chahte ke Allah tumhein maaf kare? Aur Allah bada maaf karne wala, bahut reham karne wala hai.' (24:22) Isper Abu Bakr ne kaha, 'Haan, Allah ki qasam, Aye hamare Rab!
