Hadith text

Narrated Anas bin Malik:Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman came to `Uthman at the time when the people of Sham and the people of Iraq were Waging war to conquer Arminya and Adharbijan. Hudhaifa was afraid of their (the people of Sham and Iraq) differences in the recitation of the Qur'an, so he said to `Uthman, "O chief of the Believers! Save this nation before they differ about the Book (Qur'an) as Jews and the Christians did before." So `Uthman sent a message to Hafsa saying, "Send us the manuscripts of the Qur'an so that we may compile the Qur'anic materials in perfect copies and return the manuscripts to you." Hafsa sent it to `Uthman. `Uthman then ordered Zaid bin Thabit, `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair, Sa`id bin Al-As and `AbdurRahman bin Harith bin Hisham to rewrite the manuscripts in perfect copies. `Uthman said to the three Quraishi men, "In case you disagree with Zaid bin Thabit on any point in the Qur'an, then write it in the dialect of Quraish, the Qur'an was revealed in their tongue." They did so, and when they had written many copies, `Uthman returned the original manuscripts to Hafsa. `Uthman sent to every Muslim province one copy of what they had copied, and ordered that all the other Qur'anic materials, whether written in fragmentary manuscripts or whole copies, be burnt

Anas bin Malik bataate hain: Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman Uthman ke paas aaye us waqt jab Sham aur Iraq ke log Armenia aur Azerbaijan fatah karne ke liye jang lad rahe the. Hudhaifa ko unki (Sham aur Iraq waalon ki) Quran ki qiraat mein ikhtelaf ka dar tha, isliye unhone Uthman se kaha, 'Aye Ameer-ul-Momineen! Is ummat ko bachaaiye is se pehle ke wo Kitaab (Quran) ke baare mein ikhtelaf karein jaisa Yahudiyon aur Isaaiyon ne pehle kiya tha.' To Uthman ne Hafsa ko paighaam bheja, 'Humein Quran ke nuskhe bhej dein taake hum Quraani maadde ko mukammal nuskhon mein jama kar sakein aur wo nuskhe aapko wapas kar dein.' Hafsa ne wo Uthman ko bhej diye. Uthman ne phir Zaid bin Thabit, Abdullah bin Az-Zubair, Saeed bin Al-As aur Abdur Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham ko hukm diya ke wo nuskhon ko mukammal kaapiyon mein dobara likhein. Uthman ne teen Quraishi logon se kaha, 'Agar tum Zaid bin Thabit se Quran ke kisi maamle par ikhtelaf karo, to use Quraish ke lehje mein likho, kyunke Quran unki hi zabaan mein naazil hua tha.' Unhone aisa hi kiya, aur jab unhone bahut si kaapiyaan taiyaar kar li, to Uthman ne asal nuskhe Hafsa ko wapas kar diye. Uthman ne har Musalmaan ilaake ko unki taiyaar ki hui ek kaapi bheji, aur hukm diya ke baaki sab Quraani maadde, chaahe wo bikhre hue nuskhe hon ya poori kaapiyaan, jala diye jaayein.
