Hadith text
Narrated Um 'Atiyya:We were forbidden to mourn for more than three days for a dead person, except for a husband, for whom a wife should mourn for four months and ten days (while in the mourning period) we were not allowed to put kohl in our eyes, nor perfume our-selves, nor wear dyed clothes, except a garment of 'Asb (special clothes made in Yemen). But it was permissible for us that when one of us became clean from her menses and took a bath, she could use a piece of a certain kind of incense. And it was forbidden for us to follow funeral processions
Umm Atiyya bataati hain: Humein kisi mare hue ke liye teen din se zyaada maatam karne se mana kiya gaya tha, siwaaye shohar ke, jiske liye biwi ko chaar mahine das din maatam karna chaahiye. (Maatam ki muddat mein) humein aankhon mein surma lagaane, khushbu lagaane, ya rangeen kapde pehnne ki ijaazat nahi thi, siwaaye Asb (Yemen mein banaaye jaane wale khaas kapde) ke. Magar humein ye ijaazat thi ke jab hum mein se koi apni haiz se paak hokar nahaale, to wo ek khaas qism ki khushbu (loban) istemaal kar sakti thi. Aur humein janaaze ke jaloos mein shaamil hone se bhi mana kiya gaya tha.
