Sahih al-Bukhari 5488

Hadith text

Narrated Abu Tha`laba Al-Khushani:I came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! We are living in the land of the people of the Scripture and we take our meals in their utensils, and in the land there is game and I hunt with my bow and trained or untrained hounds; please tell me what is lawful for us of that." He said, "As for your saying that you are living in the land of the people of the Scripture and that you eat in their utensils, if you can get utensils other than theirs, do not eat in their utensils, but if you do not find (other than theirs), then wash their utensils and eat in them. As for your saying that you are in the land of game, if you hung something with your bow, and have mentioned Allah's Name while hunting, then you can eat (the game). And if you hunt something with your trained hound, and have mentioned Allah's Name on sending it for hunting then you can eat (the game). But if you hunt something with your untrained hound and you were able to slaughter it before its death, you can eat of it

Abu Thalaba Al-Khushani bataate hain: Main Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ke paas aaya aur kaha, 'Aye Allah ke Rasool! Hum Ahl-e-Kitaab ki zameen mein rehte hain aur unke bartanon mein khaate hain, aur us zameen mein shikaar hai aur main apne teer-kamaan aur trained ya bina-trained kutton se shikaar karta hoon; barah-e-meharbaani mujhe bataaiye is mein se kya hamare liye jaayez hai.' Unhone kaha, 'Jahaan tak tumhaari baat hai ke tum Ahl-e-Kitaab ki zameen mein rehte ho aur unke bartanon mein khaate ho, agar tumhein unke ilaawa bartan mil sakte hain, to unke bartanon mein mat khaao, magar agar na mile, to unke bartan dho lo aur unmein khaao. Jahaan tak shikaar ki zameen mein hone ki baat hai, agar tum apne teer-kamaan se kuch shikaar karo aur shikaar karte waqt Allah ka naam liya ho, to tum (shikaar) khaa sakte ho. Aur agar apne trained kutte se kuch shikaar karo aur use shikaar ke liye bhejte waqt Allah ka naam liya ho, to tum khaa sakte ho. Magar agar apne bina-trained kutte se kuch shikaar karo aur use mrityu se pehle zibah kar sako, to tum use khaa sakte ho.'
