Hadith text
Narrated Al-Aswad:`Aisha bought Barira in order to manumit her, but her masters stipulated that her Wala' (after her death) would be for them. `Aisha said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have bought Barira in order to manumit her, but her masters stipulated that her Wala' will be for them." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Manumit her as the Wala is for the one who manumits (the slave)," or said, "The one who pays her price." Then `Aisha bought and manumitted her. After that, Barira was given the choice (by the Prophet) (to stay with her husband or leave him). She said, "If he gave me so much and so much (money) I would not stay with him." (Al-Aswad added: Her husband was a free man.) The sub-narrator added: The series of the narrators of Al-Aswad's statement is incomplete. The statement of Ibn `Abbas, i.e., when I saw him he was a slave, is more authentic
Al-Aswad bataate hain: Aisha ne Barira ko khareeda taake unhein azaad kar sakein, magar unke maalikon ne shart rakhi ke unka Wala' (unki maut ke baad) unke paas rahega. Aisha ne kaha, 'Aye Allah ke Rasool! Maine Barira ko azaad karne ke liye khareeda hai, magar unke maalikon ne shart rakhi hai ke unka Wala' unke paas rahega.' Nabi (SAW) ne kaha, 'Unhein azaad kar do, kyunke Wala' us shaks ke liye hai jo azaad karta hai,' ya kaha, 'jo unki keemat adaa karta hai.' Phir Aisha ne unhein khareeda aur azaad kar diya. Iske baad, Barira ko (Nabi ke zariye) ikhtiyaar diya gaya (apne shohar ke saath rehne ya use chhod dene ka). Unhone kaha, 'Agar wo mujhe itna aur itna (paisa) de, main uske saath nahi rahoongi.' (Al-Aswad ne izaafa kiya: Unka shohar ek azaad aadmi tha.) Ravi ne izaafa kiya: Al-Aswad ke bayaan ke raviyon ki silsila poori nahi hai. Ibn Abbas ka bayaan, yaani 'jab maine unhein dekha wo ek ghulaam the,' zyaada mustanad hai.
