Hadith text
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:Regarding the Qur'anic Verse: 'O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will.' (4.19) The custom (in the Pre-Islamic Period) was that if a man died, his relatives used to have the right to inherit his wife, and if one of them wished, he could marry her, or they could marry her to somebody else, or prevent her from marrying if they wished, for they had more right to dispose of her than her own relatives. Therefore this Verse was revealed concerning this matter
Ibn Abbas bataate hain (Quran ki is Aayat ke baare mein): 'Aye Iman waalon! Tumhein khawaateen ko unki marzi ke khilaaf miraas mein lene se mana kiya gaya hai.' (4:19) Jaahiliyat ke daur mein riwaayat thi ke agar koi aadmi mar jaaye, uske rishtedaaron ko uski biwi ko miraas mein lene ka haq hota tha, aur agar unmein se koi chaahe, wo use shaadi kar sakta tha, ya wo use kisi aur se shaadi karwaa sakte the, ya agar wo chaahein to use shaadi karne se rok sakte the, kyunke unhein uske apne khud ke rishtedaaron se zyaada haq tha use nirdesh karne ka. Isliye ye Aayat is maamle ke baare mein naazil hui thi.
