Narrated Al-A`mash:I asked Abu Wail, "Did you witness the battle of Siffin between `Ali and Muawiya?" He said, "Yes," and added, "Then I heard Sahl bin Hunaif saying, 'O people! Blame your personal opinions in your religion. No doubt, I remember myself on the day of Abi Jandal; if I had the power to refuse the order of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), I would have refused it. We have never put our swords on our shoulders to get involved in a situation that might have been horrible for us, but those swords brought us to victory and peace, except this present situation.' Al-A'mash bataate hain: Maine Abu Wail se pucha, 'Kya aap Siffin ki jang mein maujood the jo Ali aur Muawiya ke beech hui?' Unhone kaha, 'Haan,' aur izaafa kiya, 'Phir maine Sahl bin Hunaif ko ye kehte suna, "Aye logo! Apni deen ke maamlon mein apni khud ki raay par ilzaam lagaao. Shak nahi, mujhe Abi Jandal ke din ka waqia yaad hai; agar mere paas Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ke hukm ko rad karne ki taaqat hoti, to main use rad karta. Humne apni talwaarein kabhi apne kandhon par kisi aisi sthiti mein daalne ke liye nahi uthaayi jo hamare liye khaufnaak hoti, magar wo talwaarein humein jeet aur amn tak le gayi, siwaaye is moujooda haalat ke." Abu Wail ne kaha, "Main Siffin ki jang mein maujood tha, aur Siffin kitni buri thi."'
