Sahih al-Bukhari 7490

Hadith text

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:(regarding the Verse):-- 'Neither say your prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone.' (17.110) This Verse was revealed while Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was hiding himself in Mecca, and when he raised his voice while reciting the Qur'an, the pagans would hear him and abuse the Qur'an and its Revealer and to the one who brought it. So Allah said:-- 'Neither say your prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone.' (17.110) That is, 'Do not say your prayer so loudly that the pagans can hear you, nor say it in such a low tone that your companions do not hear you.' But seek a middle course between those (extremes), i.e., let your companions hear, but do not relate the Qur'an loudly, so that they may learn it from you

Ibn Abbas bataate hain (is Aayat ke baare mein): 'Na to apni namaz oonchi awaaz mein padho, na hi use dhime lehje mein padho.' (17:110) Ye Aayat tab naazil hui thi jab Allah ke Rasool (SAW) khud ko Makkah mein chhupaaye hue the, aur jab wo Quran ki tilaawat karte waqt apni awaaz oonchi karte, mushrik unhein sunte aur Quran, uske Naazil karne wale, aur use laane wale ki bura-bhala kehte. To Allah ne kaha: 'Na to apni namaz oonchi awaaz mein padho, na hi use dhime lehje mein padho.' (17:110) Yaani, 'Apni namaz itni oonchi awaaz mein mat padho ke mushrik tumhein sun sakein, na hi ise itne dhime lehje mein padho ke tumhaare saathi tumhein na sun sakein.' Balke in dono (intiha) ke beech ka raasta talaash karo, yaani apne saathiyon ko sunne do, magar Quran itni oonchi awaaz mein na sunaao (ke mushrik sunein), taake wo tumse ise seekh sakein.
