Sahih al-Bukhari 7525

Hadith text

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:regarding the explanation of the Verse:-- '(O Muhammad!) Neither say your prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone.' (17.110) This Verse was revealed while Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was hiding himself at Mecca. At that time, when he led his companions in prayer, he used to raise his voice while reciting the Qur'an; and if the pagans heard him, they would abuse the Qur'an, its Revealer, and the one who brought it. So Allah said to His Prophet: "Neither say your prayer aloud. i.e., your recitation (of Qur'an) lest the pagans should hear (it) and abuse the Qur'an" nor say it in a low tone, "lest your voice should fail to reach your companions, "but follow a way between

Ibn Abbas bataate hain (is Aayat ki tashreeh ke baare mein): '(Aye Muhammad!) Na to apni namaz oonchi awaaz mein padho, na hi use dhime lehje mein padho.' (17:110) Ye Aayat tab naazil hui thi jab Allah ke Rasool (SAW) khud ko Makkah mein chhupaaye hue the. Us waqt, jab wo apne sahaaba ko namaz padhaate, wo Quran ki tilaawat karte waqt apni awaaz oonchi karte; aur agar mushrik unhein sunte, wo Quran, uske Naazil karne wale, aur use laane wale ki bura-bhala kehte. To Allah ne apne Nabi se kaha: 'Na to apni namaz oonchi awaaz mein padho,' yaani, 'apni tilaawat (Quran ki) is dar se mat oonchi karo ke mushrik ise sun sakein aur Quran ka bura-bhala kahein,' 'na hi use dhime lehje mein padho,' 'is dar se ke tumhaari awaaz tumhaare saathiyon tak na pahunche,' 'balke in dono ke beech ka raasta apnao.'
