Hadith text
Narrated `Umar bin Al-Khattab:I heard Hisham bin Hakim reciting Surat-al-Furqan during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), I listened to his recitation and noticed that he was reciting in a way that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had not taught me. I was about to jump over him while He was still in prayer, but I waited patiently and when he finished his prayer, I put my sheet round his neck (and pulled him) and said, "Who has taught you this Sura which I have heard you reciting?" Hisham said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) taught it to me." I said, "You are telling a lie, for he taught it to me in a way different from the way you have recited it!" Then I started leading (dragged) him to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said (to the Prophet), " I have heard this man reciting Surat-al- Furqan in a way that you have not taught me." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "(O `Umar) release him! Recite, O Hisham." Hisham recited in the way I heard him reciting. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "It was revealed like this." Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Recite, O `Umar!" I recited in the way he had taught me, whereupon he said, "It was revealed like this," and added, "The Qur'an has been revealed to be recited in seven different ways, so recite of it whichever is easy for you ." Umar bin Al-Khattab bataate hain: Maine Hisham bin Hakim ko Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ki zindagi mein Surah Al-Furqan padhte suna. Maine unki tilaawat suni aur notice kiya ke wo ise us tareeke se padh rahe the jo Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne mujhe nahi sikhaaya tha. Main unpar kood padne wala tha jabke wo abhi namaz mein the, magar maine sabra kiya, aur jab unhone apni namaz khatam ki, maine apna chaadar unki gardan ke gird lapeta (aur unhein khainchte hue) aur kaha, 'Ye Surah tumhein kisne sikhaayi jo maine tumhein padhte suna?' Hisham ne kaha, 'Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne mujhe ye sikhaayi.' Maine kaha, 'Tum jhoot bol rahe ho, kyunke unhone mujhe ye ek alag tareeke se sikhaayi hai jaisa tumne padha!' Phir main unhein Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ke paas le gaya (ghaseette hue) aur kaha (Nabi se), 'Maine is aadmi ko Surah Al-Furqan aisi tarah padhte suna jaisa aapne mujhe nahi sikhaaya.' Nabi (SAW) ne kaha: '(Aye Umar) unhein chhod do! Padho, Aye Hisham.' Hisham ne usi tarah padha jaisa maine unhein padhte suna tha. Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne kaha, 'Ye isi tarah naazil hua hai.' Phir Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne kaha, 'Padho, Aye Umar!' Maine usi tarah padha jaisa unhone mujhe sikhaaya tha, jispar unhone kaha, 'Ye isi tarah naazil hua hai,' aur izaafa kiya, 'Ye Quran saat alag-alag tareekon mein padhne ke liye naazil hua hai, isliye ise jis tarah bhi tumhare liye aasaan ho, padho.'
