Hadith text
Narrated Zahdam:There were good relations and brotherhood between this tribe of Jurm and the Ash`ariyyin. Once, while we were sitting with Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari, there was brought to him a meal which contained chicken meat, and there was sitting beside him, a man from the tribe of Bani Taimul-lah who looked like one of the Mawali. Abu Musa invited the man to eat but the man said, "I have seen chicken eating some dirty things, and I have taken an oath not to eat chicken." Abu Musa said to him, "Come along, let me tell you something in this regard. Once I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) with a few men from Ash`ariyyin and we asked him for mounts. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, By Allah, I will not mount you on anything; besides I do not have anything to mount you on.' Then a few camels from the war booty were brought to the Prophet, and he asked about us, saying, 'Where are the group of Ash`ariyyin?' So he ordered for five fat camels to be given to us and then we set out. We said, 'What have we done? Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took an oath that he would not give us anything to ride and that he had nothing for us to ride, yet he provided us with mounts. We made Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forget his oath! By Allah, we will never be successful.' So we returned to him and reminded him of his oath. He said, 'I have not provided you with the mount, but Allah has done so. By Allah, I may take an oath to do something, but on finding something else which is better, I do that which is better and make the expiation for my oath
Zahdam bataate hain: Jurm qabeele aur Ash'ariyyin ke beech achhe rishte aur bhaichaara tha. Ek baar, jab hum Abu Musa Al-Ashari ke saath baithe the, unke paas ek khaana laaya gaya jismein murgi ka gosht tha, aur unke paas Banu Taimullah qabeele ka ek shaks baitha tha jo ek Maula (azaad kiye ghulaam) jaisa dikhta tha. Abu Musa ne us shaks ko khaane ki dawat di magar usne kaha, 'Maine murgi ko kuch gandi cheezein khaate dekha hai, aur maine murgi na khaane ki qasam khaayi hai.' Abu Musa ne usse kaha, 'Aao, main tumhein is baare mein kuch bataata hoon. Ek baar main Ashariyyin qabeele ke kuch logon ke saath Nabi (SAW) ke paas gaya aur humne unse sawaariyaan maangi. Nabi (SAW) ne kaha, "Allah ki qasam, main tumhein kisi bhi cheez par sawaar nahi karunga; iske ilaawa mere paas tumhein sawaar karaane ke liye kuch bhi nahi hai." Phir jang ke maal-e-ganimat mein se kuch oont Nabi ke paas laaye gaye, aur unhone hamare baare mein pucha, kehte hue, "Ashariyyin ka giroh kahaan hai?" To unhone humein paanch mote-taaze oont dene ka hukm diya aur hum chal pade. Humne kaha, "Humne ye kya kiya? Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ne qasam khaayi thi ke wo humein sawaar karaane ke liye kuch nahi denge aur unke paas humein sawaar karaane ke liye kuch nahi hai, phir bhi unhone humein sawaariyaan de di. Humne Allah ke Rasool (SAW) ko unki qasam bhula di! Allah ki qasam, hum kabhi kaamyaab nahi honge." To hum unke paas wapas gaye aur unhein unki qasam yaad dilaayi. Unhone kaha, "Maine tumhein sawaariyaan nahi di, balke Allah ne di hain. Allah ki qasam, main kisi baat ki qasam khaa sakta hoon, magar agar mujhe kuch aur behtar mile, to main wo behtar cheez karta hoon aur apni qasam ka kaffara ada karta hoon."'
